I can't remember the last time I've heard such a diverse mishmash of metal. From melodic hard rock and progressive to hardcore and death, this single-CD compilation from Vancouver, B.C.-based Scrape Records showcases almost 20 new and veteran Canadian bands. The musical and audio quality varies greatly, but that's a given with collections like this.
Highlights include the rambunctious Devin Townsend opener ("Genocide"), the Led Zeppelin-influenced stoner rock stylings of Sir Hedgehog ("The Cleavage and the Clamp"), the spunky Crashing Angels ("Runaway"), the female-fronted hair metal of the Karen Single Band ("Wide Open") and the Guns N' Roses vocal sensibilities of Empyria ("Sense of Mind"). Lowlights include the gravelly drone of Deadblow Hammer ("Pain"), the Rob Zombie wannabe Thor ("Dogz II"), the uncomfortable wailing of Three Inches of Blood ("Headwaters of the River of Blood") and Zuckuss, who begin "Cum Drunk Whore" with the sounds of fucking.
Packaged to look like a menu ("metal feast," get it?), artists are listed in such categories as "Appetizers," "Beverages," "Main Course," After Dinner Drinks" and "Dessert." With 19 choices — some tastier than others — odds are you'll walk away from this one at least partially full.
