Nightscape: Symphony of the Night

If you dig symphonic power metal bands like Stratovarius, Time Requiem, Edguy, Helloween, Angra, or like the neo-classical fantasy metal of Hammerfall and Symphony X, then Nightscape will be right up your alley. These guys have what it takes to make a name for themselves in the genre, as Symphony of the Night has melodies and harmonies that never end, not to mention plenty of musical fireworks. Guitarist Joakim Wiklund rips out some mean sweep picking on "Higher Than Life" alongside the symphonic keyboards of Markus Sundquist and the relentless drum barrage from Tyler Voelz. Despite the excellent musicianship on the album, it's the vocals of Simon Akesson that really stand out. While he's squarely in the style of Kiske, Kotipelto, Tate, and Sammett, his effortless delivery and soaring high notes are extremely melodic and powerful, never once straining.

For those who like lots of guitar/keyboard duels, you get plenty of those. Just check out the melodic yet fiery exchange between Sundquist and Wiklund on "Merlin", or the intricate unison lines on "The Serpent King". These young Swedes certainly have the chops, and the songs on Symphony of the Night are accessible, rocking, yet very progressive sounding. This is a release that will surely please both the metal and prog crowd, and is a real winner for Lion Music.
