Vanden Plas: Live & Immortal (deluxe edition)

Here we have a new live CD/DVD set from German prog-metal titans Vanden Plas, recorded & filmed in 2016 in their hometown of Kaiserslautern, Germany, and celebrating two of their then recent releases, the two Chronicles of the Immortals albums that came out in 2013 & 2014, along with other Vanden Plas favorites. Also noteworthy, the band played two song never before performed on stage, those being "Scarlet Flower Fields" and "The Final Murder", which fit in quite nicely alongside old favorites "Christ O", "Postcard to God", "Holes in the Sky", "Frequency", "How Many Tears", "Iodic Rain", and many others. In fact, 15 songs in total were played on this evening, the band in fine form and the crowd loving every minute of it.

The Line-up of the band for this show was:

Andy Kuntz- Vocals
Stephan Lill- Guitars
Andreas Lill- Drums
Torsten Reichert- Bass
Günter Werno-Keyboards

Though he clearly is an excellent vocalist on their studio albums, but to really experience Andy Kuntz is to see him on stage, and he's the driving force behind this entire show. The guy really is a top notch pro, his vocals are excellent here, and he's such a good frontman, which you can see throughout this entire performance. Toss in some excellent guitar work from Stephan, incredible drumming from his brother Andreas, rock solid bass courtesy of Torsten, and Gunter's nimble keyboard work (yes, lots of keyboard solos!), and you have the makings of a spectacular performance from one of the great modern prog-metal acts. Audio throughout is very strong, and though the DVD video isn't the best I've seen, it's solid, no doubt the blu-ray version is even better.

In short, Live & Immortal will be a welcome addition to any progressive metal CD/DVD/blu-ray collection.
