Goalby, Peter: I Will Come Runnin’

Well, this is a treat. Hot on the heels of the unexpected and excellent Easy With The Heartaches comes I Will Come Runnin’, the second collection of unreleased tracks from one-time Trapeze and Uriah Heep frontman Peter Goalby. Just like the first collection, what this ten track effort is crammed full of is hook laden melodic rock with a pop sensibility and an ear for a huge chorus. Think Bad English meets Magnum with the merest hint of Nik Kershaw and you’ll pretty much be slap bang in the middle of “Waitin’ For An Angel To Call�, or indeed “I Will Come Runnin’� itself.

With the whole endeavour, from tape transfer to mastering and CD artwork, overseen by Goalby, the standard remains universally high, although it should be no surprise that the sound lands firmly in an 80s niche, after all that’s when these tracks were recorded. However, what that ensures is that there’s a real authenticity about “There’s Always A Place In My Heart�, which moves confidently between heart tugging slowie and riff totting melodic rock, or “Rock n Roll Crazy�, which wouldn’t have been out of place on a Robert Palmer album around the time of his commercial peak.

Vocally Goalby really hits the mark, turning his hand to the gently eclectic mix without any issues whatsoever, although, if there’s a criticism, it’s that a few of the songs do have a tendency to become a little repetitive, with chorus lines repeated over and over as songs take just a little too long to come to their conclusion. That said, it was the era of the long ‘talk over’ fade out when these tracks were put together, so that mini-aberration is maybe understandable. For my money, this second collection of lost tracks from the Peter Goalby vaults isn’t quite as strong as the first, but taken on their own merits still come highly recommended for any follower of 80s melodic pop-rock. Hopefully there are more releases still in the pipeline.
