Ufomammut: Fenice

Italian Stoner trio Ufomammut released their 9th album Fenice on May 6th. After two decades of psychedelic riff workship, Ufomammut have seen some changes in their ranks with new drummer Levre recently joining the group. The album’s title Fenice, “phoenix” in Italian, marks this change and represents Ufomammut seeking to rise from the ashes, reborn.

To quote directly from the press release, “The album was conceived as a single concept track, divided in six facets of this inward-facing focus. Sonic experimentations abound in the exploration of this central theme; synths and experimental vocal effects are featured more prominently than ever before as the band push themselves ever further into the uncharted territory of their very identity”. I’ve quoted this because I feel as though this sentence tells you a lot about the new album in a succinct way. Certainly, the use of Synths on this album is very notable, with the album having many ambient, synth led moments in between the more typical slow and crushing Doom/Stoner riffs and grooves. The term “Sonic Experimentations” also seems very fitting. Parts of the album sound like a band jamming/improvising in the studio on certain grooves and themes, or trying out new effects and production techniques to take the listener to places outside the typical stoner doom areas. This sort of experimental, spontaneous aspect to the release adds a real charm to the arrangements and successfully takes you on a psychedelic journey. Given the layering of Synths, Riffs, jammy sections and spacey moments the album requires a few more listens than the typical Stoner album before it properly embeds itself. I found myself hanging on to different riffs and moments on each listen as the album revealed itself.

The 6 tracks are intended to be listened together and due to the way the album flows I wouldn’t necessarily recommend that you listen to any of the tracks out of context. However, the track "Psychostasia" has been released as a single and is probably a good place to start if you’re interested in getting a flavour of the album.

Ufomammut are already a revered name in the Stoner/Doom genre but I believe this album will further enhance their standing. Fenice is a listening journey well worth your time...take the trip.
