Teves, John: The Everlasting Dawn
After the first few minutes of The Everlasting Dawn, there is little doubt that multi-instrumentalist / vocalist John Teves was heavily influenced by Yes and ELP. The Everlasting Dawn is a one man band, and Teves displays his impressive talents throughout the seven tracks. If I were a betting man, my money would be on John being a keyboard player first and foremost, but the guitar and bass playing are extremely well done. There are plenty of instrumental breaks for fans of keyboard and guitar passages, and Teves does focus on melody over flash.
The instrumentals are where Teves strengths lie, the solo acoustic guitar “La Gata Blanca” and the orchestral “Klavierkonzert” seem to be fully realized, and are the standout tracks. Where things seem to get shaky are the vocals, delivered in the higher registers (another Yes influence), they become grating over the course of the CD. I also find that the drumming lacks the power and finesse that are found in Teves keyboard and guitar playing. The drums feel clumsy and a bit out of step with the music. Listen to the drumming in “Lasting Impressions”, it is quite choppy and detracts from the music. Lastly, there is something about the slide guitar that sounds a touch out of tune to my ears.
Teves musical ideas are there, but he needs musicians to collaborate with and give his music the treatment it deserves. It might help it sound less derivative, and better executed.
