Oh Hiroshima: Myriad

Oh Hiroshima are a Swedish, Post Rock outfit. Myriad is the title of their 4th album and is notably the first release that sees the band write and record as a Duo.

Post-rock isn’t usually my go-to genre, however when it is done well I do find the reverb drenched, texture laden style to be quite enjoyable. No doubt Oh Hiroshima are a top tier Post rock act and subsequently I find their album Myriad to be strong and interesting release.

Post rock is more about ambiance than riffs, but I find the guitar work to be quite notable on this album. The drumming is well executed too, complementing the mood throughout, and adding the required punch when needed. The arrangements have a nice mix of moods and feeling-often grad and majestic, but also retreating to quieter, more subdued vibes at times too. Hemström’s vocals are decent without being overly prominent-they’re the typical post-rock, style -understated and washed with reverb.

This isn’t a criticism at all, but perhaps one of the reasons I find the album to be a decent listen (even though it isn’t my usual cup of tea) is the modest run time (under 39 minutes). The album consists of 7 strong cinematic tracks and doesn’t overstay its welcome at all.

Myriad is a strong album, and I found it to be enjoyable for a change of pace and style in my own listening rotation. If Post-Rock is a genre, you really enjoy then you’re probably going to think I’ve underrated the album with a solid 3.5 star rating.
