Abysmal Dawn: Nightmare Frontier

Nightmare Frontier is a 4 track EP from Abysmal Dawn. I hate to be negative, but if I’m honest this seems like a ‘gap filler’, intended to tide both the label and band over whilst they find the motivation and inspiration to write a full length.

The two original tracks and two cover versions are solid enough and do contain plenty of head turning musicianship, but I find the EP to be unremarkable. My initial thoughts on the original tracks was that they sounded like ‘Beyond creation Lite’. The cover versions nod to In Flames and Candlemass, which shows the bands diversity in influence; Unfortunately, neither cover version makes a major impression on me.

The production of the release sounds to my ears like it’s a release made over dropbox, bouncing between various home studios. Whilst there is nothing wrong with this sort of approach in 2022 (especially during a global pandemic), there’s an un-tangible spark missing.

An EP for the diehard fans of Abysmal Dawn only I’d suggest.

Track Listing
1) A Nightmare Slain
2) Blacken the Sky
3) Behind Space (In Flames cover)
4) Bewitched (Candlemass cover)
