Immolation: Acts of God

Immolation is a seminal death metal band from New York. It’s been 5 years since their last studio album (a decent enough gap for sure), but then again, Immolation favour Quality over Quantity.

I won’t beat around the bush; Acts of God is probably my favorite death metal release of the year to date. It is absolutely crushing in its delivery but is also catchy enough to warrant repeat listens, and varied and complex enough to keep me on my toes.

Acts of God sounds particularly vital and energetic to my ears, particularly when you consider that this is a band formed in the 1980’s. Immolation continues to produce the goods despite being veterans of the genre, and given their standing I certainly appreciate the fact that they don’t just churn out rehashed ideas-Acts of God straddles the line between ‘old school’ and modern death metal perfectly for my taste.

The album contains 15 tracks but it doesn’t overstay its welcome at all because most of the tracks are only 3-4 minutes long; they’re short, sharp & potent. Immolation have always known how to write great death metal riffs and this album is no different. The vocals are really good too-Ross Dolan has almost the perfect growl for evil sounding Death Metal. Steve Shalaty has laid down some incredible drumming on this release which anchors the brutality in fine fashion.

It’s a well-worn cliché but Acts of God is All Killer, No Filler. It’s absolute no-brainer for fans of death metal, and will no doubt be on many end of year lists.

Immolation: Acts of God

My Score:

If you are a death metal fan, it's no secret that you probably hold the works of New York's Immolation in pretty high regard, and you probably also are well aware that this band have never released a bad album. Their latest Acts of God certainly won't break that trend, and some might argue that it might even be one of the bands best. Though one quick look at the CD will reveal 15 tracks, and that in itself might be a warning sign, fear not oh extreme metal faithful, Immolation have not disappointed here nor overstayed their welcome. Acts of God clocks in at just over 50 minutes, and not one song crosses over the 5 1/2 minute mark. What you get is a smashing death metal album, the band firing off their brand of complexity & brutality, blast beats bashing, lead guitars blazing, and bassist Ross Dolan's growls still some of the best in the business. Highlights are many, but sample if you must tracks such as "The Age of No Light", "Abandoned", "Blooded", and "Overtures of the Wicked" to get your feet wet, but you'll ultimately want the full platter of death metal ferocity that is contained on every song. It doesn't get much better than this folks.
