Octarine Sky: Close To Nearby

Octarine Sky was formed as an off shoot of Potter’s Daughter by Dyanne Potter Voegtlin and Jan Christiana. The band’s debut album is titled Close To Nearby and features some outstanding players like Guthrie Govan and Simon Phillips.

Here is the full band:
Dyanne Potter Voegtlin (vocals, piano, keyboards, Hammond B3)
Jan Christiana (bass, guitars, keyboards, Hammond B3, vocals)
Simon Phillips (drums)
Guthrie Govan (guitars on “Night Sky/Into the Dream”, “5”, “Midnight”, “VII”)
Amit Chatterjee (electric guitar, synth guitar on “Hold”)
Christian Voegtlin (narration on “The Mask”)
Ronda Dubiel (lyrics for “Night Sky/Into the Dream”, “Hold”)

The disc begins with the quirky and eclectic “One” where rhythmic changes and off the wall creativity combine with some cooking instrumental fireworks. The band is able to take disparate pieces and meld it into a cohesive, unifying piece of music. An excellent start to the album. “Rosewind” has a softer groove with elegant vocals intermixed with surging rhythms and dramatic choruses. Jazz and prog combine to make “Night Sky/Into the Dream” one of the more intriguing pieces and the guitar work from Govan is fantastic, which comes as no surprise. “The Mask” mixes ambient light with heavier moods while “Hold” features Floydy soundscapes and tasty guitar work, making for a subtle yet highly entertaining listen.

What a nice surprise to hear a new band with such a promising future. I really hope the band stays around for a while and continues to make creative rock music. Easily recommended for all fans of melodic, yet eclectic progressive rock.
