Godslave: Positive Aggressive

When I was younger, I was fascinated by the way Dio used lyrics to evoke specific moods and ideas. There was something magical, sometimes even inspiring, about his lyrics even though I did not always understand what they were saying. “Holy Diver” was especially confusing with all its talk of tigers and stripes. Even though there are websites dedicated to interpreting lyrics nowadays, I admit that it was great fun to try and puzzle out what Dio was trying to say without help.

This lyrics on this album will not likely inspire as much debate as Dio’s lyrics, but it is no less interesting for that. The main thing Godslave wants listeners to understand is that this is an album about focus, developing a positive attitude, and working actively on things you want to change. To underscore all this, the lyrics (written by Bernie Lorig, who also plays guitar) drew inspiration from his own honest look at himself and his struggles. To some extent, the band joined him. They released a documentary that dives into how they almost broke up last year and what steps they took to keep things going.

With all this talk of choices, you might want to simply opt for putting on “Freewill” by Rush and let Neil Peart’s lyrics do their work. While that’s never a bad idea, I’d suggest taking a listen to this album anyway. You see, Godslave is a solid German thrash band, and this album has more than enough energy to keep things moving.

If you aren’t terribly familiar with Godslave, this might even be a good place to start even though the band has been putting out solid music for several years. There’s nothing particularly new here, but the band never disappoints in terms of giving us solid riffs, cool guitar harmonies, and a good thrash groove.

If you’re into thrash metal, this album will have a familiar ring to it, but you won’t be disappointed by it. It’s just good, solid, thrash. The highlights on this album, at least for me, are “Final Chapters First,” “Flap of a Wing,” and “Show Me Your Scars.” I also liked “How About No?” but I think the band definitely missed the chance to Dr. Evil to make a guest appearance.
