Grey Mouse: A Moment Of Weakness

Continuing our foray into Russian bands is Grey Mouse with five full length studio albums to their credit with their most recent release titled A Moment Of Weakness. In the band are:

Mikhail Kudrey (vocals)
Alex Chunikhin (guitar, bass guitar)
Kirill Chunikhin (drums)
Denis Bayukansky (drums)
Uliana Volkova (cello)

Psychedelic, doom and country flavourings are sprinkled throughout A Moment Of Weakness, the guitar work of Alex Chunikhin having a notable impact on the band’s sound. His playing is slow and thoughtful, picking up psychedelic and country tones, sometimes veering into a more stoner rock sound. Kudrey’s vocals have no detectable accent, at least to my ears, having a lower timbre, and are generally very strong and are a near perfect match for the band’s psychedelic and alt-country musings. “Backwater” begins with thunderstorm effects and mellow guitar lines, the band’s signature sound seems to be drenched in melancholy as a feeling of sadness is certainly invoked. That said, I would in no way call this depressing, but steeped in a minimalistic and easy flowing soundscape, impacted with excellent guitar and morose cello interplay. Psychedelic and country undertones highlight “Dark Road” whereas “Rat Race” features excellent drum work and mellow electric guitar. “Better Than Me” is quite sparse with heavy bass and a slow and steady groove and the slow burning doom of “On The Run” is absolutely outstanding. It’s deep and dark atmospheres are bone chilling.

Grey Mouse has made an excellent album with A Moment Of Weakness. Its doomy and psychedelic nature reeled me in almost immediately.

An Addicted Label release.
