Verheyen, Carl: Sundial

Carl Verheyen may be familiar to some folks around here as a member of Supertramp’s touring band, specifically the Brother Where You Bound tour in the mid ‘80s. It was a formidable task considering Gilmour played on the album’s title track. There can be no doubting Verheyen’s guitar prowess as his playing is fantastic throughout his latest release titled Sundial.

The album boasts a few different styles, from ska to cool west coast sounds beginning with the smooth easiness of the title track with its pleasingly melodic piano and airy sounds. The female backing vocals add an R&B touch and Verheyen’s guitar is perfectly pleasing on the ears. With the drum/percussive groove of “Kaningie”, Verheyen and his band blend sunshiny melodic fusion with a little Santana, creating another tasty track. A little Steely Dan can be heard in “Clawhammer Man”, featuring outstanding Rhodes and crisp, bluesy guitar leads. The slicing bluesy riffs and fine organ fills in the slow and fiery “Never Again”, the pretty homage to Art Gunfunkel in the slightly wistful “Garfunkel (It Was All Too Real)” and the David Gilmour inspired lead guitar in “Spiral Glide” which is easily my favourite track, are all excellent. I should also point out Verheyen proves to be a fine vocalist as well with a rich tone and melodic delivery.

Sundial is an excellent album from a veteran musician who deserves to get noticed by all fans of intelligent rock music. Highly recommended.
