Old Grandad: Vol. 666 / OGD EP (Reissue)

Cult Psychedelic Stoner/Death Metal outfit Old Grandad have partnered with Hectic Records to release the first ever Vinyl run of their first two classic albums, Vol.666 and OGD EP. Released together as a double album, fans will finally have the pleasure of hearing these mid-nineties growling sludge-fests in their full analog glory. All the members of Old Grandad, including on drums and vocals Will Carroll (Death Angel, Hammer of Misfortune), bass and vocals Max Barnett (Hammers of Misfortune) and guitar and vocals Erik Moggridge (Bell Witch, Aerial Ruin), have all kept themselves busy over the years but have still continued to perform with the band and release three new albums up to and including 2019’s self-titled offering.

On this reissue fans of the band know exactly what to expect, a blend of heavy, simple, stoner metal riffs, tripped out psychedelic vocals, 90’s hard edged aggression, thrash and death metal, but they’ll be getting it with a much warmer analog sound which definitely adds to the meaty heaviness of the album. Standout tracks include fan favorite “Blatant Drug Song'' with its straight for the jugular riffing and manic vocals, “Urine Angel” with its unadulterated anti-religious screams and killer slow heavy pulversing stoner riffing. Also the Thrashing, hardcore edge of “Don’t Call Me A Deadhead” with it driving, angry, propulsion launching you straight into a vicious 90’s mosh pit vibe. The Manic death punk of “I’m Frying On Acid” is pure youthful explosive energy and “All Calls In Daze” is a slow burn that crawls along through the muddy swamp with eerie, monotone and doubled vocals and then takes off into space with delayed looping guitars lines.

The performances are exactly what you would want from this music, intense and raw, loose and loud but also held down with great precision from the great Will Carroll on drums. The blending of Stoner, Thrash and Death Metal with Punk and Hardcore as well as Heavy Rock and Psychedelia works perfectly. The vocals range from manic screams to death growls to trippy stoner singing and at times the music feels like it's right on the edge of falling apart. Because of that, the danger is baked into the music, and for that reason this album kicks ass.
