Bloodbound: Creatures of the Dark Realm

Nine studio albums into their expansive career, European Heavy/Power Metallers Bloodbound unite all metalheads to release their brand new opus titled Creatures of the Dark Realm and personally, I think this is the strongest record the band have conjured up in a very long time.

Loaded with the catchy Sabaton-esque anthems, the Swedes really hit the mark quite naturally and they consistently deliver that Power Metal punch with the superiorly elegant numbers of 'Ever Burning Flame', 'Gathering of Souls', and also the triumphant single 'When Fate is Calling'; neatly grabbing all the aspects of attention from all the surrounding angles within the music and delivery.

With all the six members sitting on a sublime wave of form, tracks like the bombastically arranged title-track 'Creatures of the Dark Realm' and the heavily-immersed Priest influenced 'Eyes Come Alive' that me reminds of the neighbouring Power Metal powerizers Manimal, and it expresses the Galveborg warriors as the definitive true winners of these glorious endeavours moving forward with some fire of a forceful nature.

For the guys essentially hailing from the Dragon Empire, the bulk of the compositions on this offering appear to be that good they will become Bloodbound essentials and a question many of you may ask before listening to the record will be with no doubt - is there anything different here from previous efforts in terms of style? The answer is simply no.

All the material on Creatures of the Dark Realm has that previous well-known signature Bloodbound sound and throughout songs like the boisterous battle hymn single 'March into War' and the effectively niche 'Kill or Be Killed' just are designed to be praised as hugely welcomed entries to the package for the Bloodheads to ultimately unite in the name of Heavy Metal for the greater times inside the darker realms of their Dragon swarming kingdom.

Bloodbound: Creatures of the Dark Realm

My Score:

Sweden's Bloodbound once again don't fail to knock it out of the park, here their 9th album Creatures of the Dark Realm delivers all that we know and love from this band. Symphonic power metal is a style of metal that is well populated by countless European bands in recent years, but Bloodbound have a knack for churning out albums that catch your ear instantly and don't bash us over the head with cheese. The opening title track is a perfect example of what they do so well; instantly memorable chorus, loads of keyboards, tight drumming, and big riffs complemented by shredding guitar solos. Other standouts here include "Death Will Lead the Way", the soaring "When Fate is Calling", the fist pumping, somewhat Nightwish-sounding "Ever Burning Flame", the raging "Eyes Come Alive", and the truly anthemic "Gathering of Souls". In fact, I'd say if you love the bombastic nature of the already mentioned Nightwish, then Bloodbound is tailor made for you, save for male vocals instead of Floor Jansen.

In short, another winner of an album from Bloodbound...oh yeah, and that cover art is spectacular as well!
