OGD: The Big Game

OGD (Olivero/Gavin/De Ranieri) is a power rock trio with their 2020 debut album titled The Big Game under their belts. Derek Olivero supplies guitars and vocals while Bobby Gavin adds drums and vocals, and Dave De Ranieri supplies bass guitar and vocals.

I have not heard of these musicians before but since the album was produced by the great Jerry Marotta my interest was certainly piqued. Also noteworthy is the artwork done by none other than Hugh Syme. And yes, there may be slight similarities to ‘90s Rush, but I stress the word slight. I hear a bigger influence of King’s X, which is always welcome by this reviewer.

The first three tracks begin the disc with a bang beginning with the fiery modern rock of “Young Love” with its slapping bass, pummeling drum work and scorching lead guitar. Another solid guitar riff begins “Sweet Life”, a catchy rocker with outstanding lead vocals providing the hook and a nice bass line digging in the groove. Even catchier is “The Word”, this one sliding into pop rock territory showcasing a purely addictive guitar riff.

A total of ten tracks with not a bad one in the bunch. Certainly a band to watch for in the coming years.
