Vola: Witness

Danish Progressive Metallers Vola bring forth their third studio installment with a fresh display of a disjointed type of Heavy Metal, consisting of the members Asger Mygind on vocals & guitars, Nicolai Mogensen on bass, Adam Janzi on drums and finally, Martin Werner on keys. With ‘Witness’, all things are go from the offset and the quality expressed throughout the record is of a higher power; keeping things moving in the brunt of things consistently without falling away from the album’s purpose.

For the duration, I would not say this is the strongest of efforts but it is an ambitious and interesting one to say the least. Tracks like the extravagant ’24 Light-Years’ and the robust ‘These black Claws’ really come across like winners to keep the entertainment of a Progressively-stylised nature beaming through excitingly.

What I love about this offering is Vola do not push it too far with the track timings and they keep things in the short and sweet category for an album sitting inside this genre. The snappy second video single ‘Straight Lines’ is evidently a notable welcoming presence that just is purely class and I feel is definitely one of the strongest outputs within the deeper musicality enchained on the bulk of ‘Witness’.

Moreover, there are some surprising elements that arise as diverse excerpts on ‘Witness’ and they appear as the solid ‘Napalm’ and the coolly constructed composition of ‘freak’; keeping the listeners interest to remain very keen and this reflects well for Danes to leave the standard increasing album by album to surely one day make Vola a bigger name than they already are.

Another very good effort from this outfit, however as I said not the strongest; I just feel as a whole the musicality needs a more muscular edge with tastier hooks and a more memorable catalogue for the congregations to enjoy. If the band continues to release music at this quality, I am very sure the release of further records will just purely get better and better for Vola, so they can continue to grow as a musical unit and a Progressive Metal phenomenon for the future to come.
