War Cloud: Earhammer Sessions

Fuzz monsters War Cloud came out of Oakland, California in 2014 and have ravaged the music scene for six years, releasing three albums thus far; War Cloud (2017), State Of Shock (2019) and their latest titled Earhammer Sessions (2020). I first became familiar with the band upon hearing the excellent State Of Shock. With their latest platter the band has taken five songs from their first release, three songs from their second and re-recorded them in order to achieve a more lively and energetic live vibe. Well, all I can say is War Cloud’s scorched Earth approach works very well for those looking for an intense listen. Bone crushing riffs, exploding drums, grooving bass lines and the rasp throated lead vocals of Alex Wein combine for a forceful and impactful sound.

The band’s speed heavy attack is on full display on the album opening “Vulture City�. The full-throated rasp laden vocals and intense rhythms create something very akin to the live experience. Some pace changes and subtle dynamics in volume control ensure a more than one dimensional approach. The catchy “Give’r� is next with another great groove and intensely fueled guitar pyrotechnics. “Chopper Wired� is highlighted by a fine deep bass line and “White Lightning� is another fast and furious ear searing ride.

Earhammer Sessions is a fine heavy metal/stoner rock album that will spend plenty of time in my listening rotation. Heavy music fans really cannot go wrong.
