Domkraft: Slow Fidelity

Domkraft is a doom/sludge/stoner band based out of Sweden led by Martin Wegeland. It is hard to find information on the band but I am left with the impression this is mainly a one man project. The latest disc is titled Slow Fidelity, containing four tracks with a running time of around forty-one minutes. This is the band’s fourth release and a very good one it is, especially if heavy fuzz is in your musical vocabulary. This really is some heavy stuff. The riffs bleed fuzz, drenched in feedback and are an intense assault on the senses. The disc begins with “Through The Ashes” with its fuzzed out tangled web of guitar riffs and heavy distortion. The shouted vocals work extremely well in this distorted environment. The music slows down just a bit allowing the bass to be come out of the woodwork and a subtle atmosphere to relieve the heaviness. Then its quickly back to thick and heavy, really what this band does best. With “Mud Collider” the twisty effects on the guitar riffs are really cool and the vocals have an earworm quality that really shouldn’t be as addictive as they are. On “Where We Part Ways” the riffs form a grinding backdrop as guest vocalists Lea Alazam, Mark Lanegan and Marty Harvey provide some excellent singing. The last track is the instrumental version of “Where We Part Ways”, a melding of exotic sounding guitar riffs, moody atmospheres, heavy doom and psychedelic tones. An excellent close to the album.

Slow Fidelity is a highly impressive metal album, fans of stoner and doom should not hesitate to give this one a spin. Easily recommended.

A Blues Funeral Recordings release.
