Voay: Cyclogenesis

German progressive rock band Voay formed a few years ago in Dortmund, Germany. In 2019 they released their debut album titled Cyclogenesis.

At first listen I wasn’t sure what to think about this album. It seemed like the classic case of throw everything in but the kitchen sink approach and the lead vocals took some getting used to. As of this writing I am totally on board as this has really grown on me after a few spins and the lead vocals I now find quite enjoyable. Sometimes music needs time to simmer and often, at least for me, my brain starts to catch on to what the band is trying to do. That’s exactly the case for me and Cyclogenesis. It all started to make sense. There are seven tracks, with four over nine minutes ensuring the band has ample opportunity to show off their chops. Besides being very good musicians the music is also pretty catchy at times, setting the occasional earworm in motion. The first track “Float” has the band’s syncopated rhythms and general band interplay going full steam ahead. Just when it gets really heavy the band throw in a changeup reverting back into mellower soundscapes. Lots of different musical segments and variations in vocal styles going from clean to intense growls, depending on what the music dictates. As I mentioned before the vocals may take some time getting used to but they are really quiet good, offering lots of variety throughout these seven tracks. More twists and turns and varying degrees of heavy and light can be heard on “Off-Course” which also includes some tasty melodic guitar and pretty nice melodies. There are fewer change ups on “Gravity” which also means the flow is smoother including the excellent guitar and keyboard work.

There is no doubting the talent this band possesses and when they throw in a good melody or two it’s like icing on the cake. Progressive rock and metal fans really should check this band out. Recommended.
