Nightwish: Decades: Live in Buenos Aries

Nightwish have, more and more over the last few years, become somewhat of a heritage act. Compilations aplenty have been the order of the day but releases of new material are relatively few and far between but live albums? We got 'em and this latest one is brought to us from sunny Argentina! Cue loads of audience noise.

Sometimes when bands release a few live albums they tend to be a bit same-y and it is difficult to see any progression in the band's sound. That's resolutely not the case with Nightwish. Firstly there's the pwerhouse vocals of the incomparable Floor Jansen who is the perfect meld of the band's previous singers namely the highly operatic Taja Turunen and the more straightforward tones of Anette Olzon. Ms. Jansen can sing all of their catalogue with ease and is, in my less than humble the best female singer in the world at the moment. There's the pounding bass and sinister vocals of long time bassist Marco Hietala, the understated guitars of Emppu Vuorinen, drums courtesy of the relatively new Kai Hahto all underpinned by the keyboards of main songsmith of Tuomas Holopainen which helps to create a heady symphonic brew.

What's that? I've missed someone? Oh yes that's right! I couldn't possibly not pronounce Troy Donockley as the record's MVP. Since becoming a full member of the band in 2013 his array of instruments have been brought much more to the fore and give the band a much more folksy/ more rounded subtle sound than previously in the live arena.

There might also be a wealth of great tunes from the, well, decades of the Nightwish existance. That a band can leave out songs such as "Wishmaster" or "Bless the Child" suggests a top notch back catalogue so this isn't a comprehensive study of the group's career but a fine snapshot of what they are about at this point in their career, hopefully with new music on the horizon to keep them moving forwards.
