Kapala: Termination Apex

Some people say, “win the battle but lose the war.� Others reverse it and say, “lose the battle but win the war.� Both expressions have a certain value, but if you listen to this album you might want to dump them both. On this album, every battle is a losing battle and warfare is the inevitable end of everything. Kapala opens and closes this album with tracks that capture the fury of a world completely overrun to instruments of death. You’ll hear screams, you’ll hear burning, you’ll hear the terror of more destruction getting closer and closer and closer.

Aside from these short bursts of noise, you’ll hear four tracks that unleash such fury that you’ll think the band itself is one of the weapons of war. Not surprisingly, that’s exactly what the band wanted. Each member pummels their instruments in ways that make them sound like part of the war machines themselves. When the music really takes off, it’s like the band has let a monster out of its cage with the understanding that it will kill everything in sight.

It’s hard to know what to call this style, but it’s something like grindcore, but the grinding is less a style than a mood. If you’re interested, be prepared for the sonic onslaught. Kapala is deliberately pushing against all forms of musical familiarity and comfort.
