Gundersen, Marius Noss: Brazilian Guitar Music

Here is an album of Brazilian music brought to you by Norwegian classical guitarist Marius Noss Gundersen. It might seem like an odd pairing at first but since 2012 and his album titled Visual Music, the Norwegian’s main focus has been on the music of Brazil. His latest effort is titled Brazilian Guitar Music, completely devoted to the work of Marco Pereira, a Brazilian classical guitarist. I will tell you that I am unfamiliar with Pereira’s music so I can’t compare it with Gundersen’s reinterpretations. I can only judge this album with what I hear and I will say Gundersen is an exceptional classical guitarist. His melodies jump out of the speakers, beautifully nuanced and instantly tuneful. His playing is just so good here I can imagine anyone interested in studying acoustic guitar would be happy to use this as a reference. Of course, this album is not only for students as it’s a joy to listen to. Whether it’s in the form of a beautiful ballad like the album opening “Estrela da Manhã” or much more lively and fun like the next track “Bate-Coxa”, Brazilian Guitar Music is really quite unforgettable. The multi part pieces “O Choro de Juliana” and “Perequetés” are also very enjoyable and very easy to listen to.

Brazilian Guitar Music is an essential purchase for fans of classical guitar and I enjoyed it very much.
