Vulture: Ghastly Waves and Battered Graves

Vulture is one of those bands that brings together a love for John Carpenter and Dario Argento and mixes it up with relentless thrash. Tracks like “The Garotte” and “B.T.B” open with some Carpenter-like synths but then quickly shift into a relentless thrash attack, the kind that will immediately take you back to the best of old school German and Bay Area thrash. The lyrics, not surprisingly, are also drawn from classic horror flicks. The nice thing about Vulture is that their songs are well constructed and are just long enough to stay exciting. The band knows that thrash works best in short, aggressive, bursts. On this album, they also welcome a new drummer (G. Deceiver) who plays with a relentlessness that suits the band’s classic thrash style.

Even though Vulture consistently delivers solid thrash, it is worth noting that this album represents a slightly more disciplined effort in the studio. The band wanted to develop an album’s worth of songs without having to leave a handful of songs on the chopping block. Because of that, they worked out each idea to the fullest extent and the result is a strong output of music that is both aggressive and catchy. If you like twin guitar harmonies"or just a cool melodic attack"this album has plenty of those moments and they all sound great.

Vulture also wanted to capture a sound that was both aggressive and cold, something that would hit listeners quickly but also maintain the sinister sense of horror. They succeeded. The guitar harmonies in “Ghastly Waves and Battered Graves” are wonderfully clear while the vocals capture Steeler’s blend of playfulness and drama perfectly. If you like twin guitar harmonies, be sure to check out the opening of “Dewer’s Hollow” or the end of “Tyrantula.” I also recommend “Stainless Glare.” It had the best Carpenter-like opening and also had some of the band’s best thrashing. You might also want to check out Vulture’s impressive cover of Thin Lizzy’s “Killer on the Loose.” They definitely made it their own. This is a solid new release from a band to watch.
