Schoepke, Dave: Drums On Low

Dave Schoepke is an American drummer who has been around for decades and is a member of the Willy Porter Band, Tweed and No Quarter (a Led Zeppelin tribute act). Progressive rock fans might be interested to know he has worked with Martin Barre (Jethro Tull) the last couple of years. Drums On Low is his first solo album.

The album features only drums so its appeal might be rather limited. I can see other drummers gravitating to this work as he is a very good musician. His rock, jazz and classical influences do come through and while I appreciate Schoepke’s skill I did find it rather difficult to listen to the entire album in one sitting. It’s almost like a forty-four minute drum solo but broken up into individual tracks. That said, his playing is quit varied, illuminating various shades of light and heavy so there are some interesting moments here, especially when he really starts to cook on the kit.

There is no doubting Schoepke is a fine drummer and while I certainly appreciate his talent this album will likely have limited appeal. Drummers in particular may find Drums On Low to be particularly rewarding.
