Opprobrium: The Fallen Entities

After all these years, Opprobrium shouldn’t have anything to prove. They’ve been releasing solid death metal since the mid-1980s and have certainly earned their reputation as a legendary act. Given that this is the band’s latest album in ten years, the Howard brothers decided to push themselves a little more in terms of their technical prowess and their overall complexity. The result is something genuinely ambitious, but comfortingly familiar. The band helped pioneer American death metal and they have stayed largely true to their roots consistently over the decades. I am mostly familiar with the band’s debut album Serpent Temptation. Not surprisingly, The Fallen Entities is more polished in terms of sound and style but it is no less heavy.

The band has two members, Moyses Howard (drums) and Francis Howard (guitars, vocals). The latter has a breathless style that is both eager and impressive. I doubt this album was recorded live, but it sometimes sounds like the Howard brothers are pushing the tempo harder and faster with each note to see if they can keep up with each other. The result is an exhilarating and exhausting group of songs. My favorite track was “The Fallen Entities,” but I also enjoyed “Turmoil Under the Sun” and “Obstructive Behavior.” Overall, this is a welcome new release from a classic metal band.
