Dustman Dilemma: On Second Thought

Dustman Dilemma hail from Caen, France and is totally new to me. They formed around 2010 and released their debut album First Trip to the Roaring Plains in 2012. Their second album titled On Second Thought crossed my listening desk a short time ago.

The band is:

Virgile Delesculier (bass)
Samuel Frin (saxophones, clarinet, additional instruments)
Nicolas Tritschuler (drums, lead vocals, additional instruments)
Pierre Blin (keyboards, additional instruments)
Bruno Godard (contrabassoon)
Jocelyn Debart (violin)

The music presented can certainly be put in the avant-prog genre and normally I have trouble getting into experimental music but there is something about this band I really like. The vocals are quite unique and on point, the singer is able to really hit some deep lingering low notes and gives quite a dynamic performance on the four vocal tracks. You may have noticed the lack of guitar and while it may be there, there is a lot going on beneath the surface, it certainly isn’t in the foreground and is not missed in the slightest. Saxophone, contrabass and clarinet add some great rhythms and solos and help give these tunes an experimental edge while adding melody at the same time. The musical lines often zigzag back and forth and the varying tempos and meter changes makes for some challenging listening. The keyboards are also a highlight, I particularly like some of the dreamy electric piano sounds found throughout the disc.

Dustman Dilemma have delivered an excellent sophomore effort that certainly pushes the boundaries while pushing all the right buttons. Highly recommended.
