Eduardo Mercuri Trio: Prelude to a Kiss

Although young, Brazilian jazz guitarist Eduardo Mercuri has built up quite a resume. The esteemed musician has worked with a number of artists including Frank London, Dave Douglas, George Garzone, and many others. The Berklee graduate is well versed in many of the folk and jazz forms of South America and on his new album of standards titled Prelude to a Kiss, his third overall, he weaves South American styles with modern jazz.

Mercuri’s excellent guitar work is all over this disc. His lyrical and clean playing slowly weaves through the Erroll Garner penned “Misty” and the uplifting melody in Churchill’s “Someday My Prince Will Come”. Both tunes have a rhythmic quality signifying the importance of Hayden Farrar (bass) and Patrick Simard (drums). Mercuri’s chord phrasings in Richard Rodger’s “Spring is Here” is another highlight. Farrar’s bass solo also deserves special mention. The beginning drum solo and the outstanding saxophone of Gustavo D’Amico in “Inner Urge” and the classic “Someone to Watch Over Me” are absolutely delightful. Gershwin’s track is treated with wonderful guitar and bass solos and adept brush work giving the ballad a beautifully relaxed feel. The rhythm section in the title track is rich and full befitting of this Ellington classic. Excellent indeed.

Although Mercuri honours these great tunes by keeping the original melodies intact, his love of these tracks comes through in is interpretations making Prelude to a Kiss a must hear for all fans of exquisitely played jazz.
