Vielma, Fran and his Venezuelan Jazz Collective: Tendencias

Combining jazz with a rhythmic Latin flair is the signature sound of Venezuelan percussionist Fran Vielma. His new album titled Tendencias continues his colourful use of percussive timbres throughout these ten tracks.

Vielma proves to be a great arranger and composer giving his band the opportunity to really let loose at times. On “Monk en Aragua” the thick percussion is augmented with fiery band interplay including excellent sax and piano solos. With “Cereal de Bobures” the floating Rhodes solo and trombone work are highlights. The vibe is somewhat dreamier and a little more mellow than on the first track. On the more easy going title track the warm percussion and multiple solos should reel in any fan of Latin jazz. The romantic “Pasaje del Olvido” features the warm vocals of Jeremy Bosch. It’s a pretty track with nice horns and another fine piano solo.

The rest of the disc is excellent as well leaving no room for duff tracks. Any fan of Latin jazz will want to check this one out. Highly recommended.
