Allman Brothers Band: Peach Picks- Cream of the Crop 2003

Ready for another epic Allman Brothers Band live album? Here we have a 4CD set titled Peach Picks-Cream of the Crop 2003 which collects some of the greatest performances from the bands July and August shows in 2003. It's worthwhile to mention also that no song is repeated in this massive set, which just goes to show you how well the Allmans changed up their setlist night after night. 36 classic tracks from throughout their long history, and another fine example of just how formidable a live at the Allman Brother Band were.

For this range of shows (recorded between July 25 and August 10, 2003 in Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Darien Center, NY, Hartford, Charlotte and Raleigh), the band were comprised of founders Gregg Allman, Jaimoe, and Butch Trucks, along with Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Marc Quinones, and Oteil Burbridge...a line-up that would eventually prove to be the longest lasting in the history of the band. Have a favorite ABB song? Chances are it's included here, led by Gregg's potent vocals and the dueling twin guitars of Haynes & Trucks. Listen to these two virtuosos weaving around each other on a kick ass version of "Black Hearted Woman", or both dropping down massive solos on a super extended "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed"...all 33+ minutes of it!

Recorded just after the band released their mighty fine studio album Hittin' the Note, the band launch into a selection of songs from that recorded, including a raucous "Rockin' Horse" (complete with a fine Haynes vocal), "Old Before My Time", the bluesy "Woman Across the River", the anthemic "The High Cost of Low Living", "Who to Believe", and a tender "Desdemona", all slotting in nicely among the classics. And, how about those classics? "One Way Out", "Whipping Post", "Revival", "Statesboro Blues", "Wasted Words", "It's Not My Cross to Bear", "Melissa", "Dreams", "Gambler's Roll", "Trouble No More", "Midnight Rider", "You Don't Love Me", "Soulshine"...the list goes on and on. Barely any gem of their catalog is forgotten here, each one chock full of Allman's swirling organ, sizzling lead guitars, the dynamic drum duo, Burbridge's nimble bass lines, and the always engaging percussion work of Quinones. Toss in a couple of cool covers ("Layla" is awesome here) and of course the sprawling "Mountain Jam", here passing the 40-minute mark, and you have a live album for the ages from the Allman Brothers Band that might not surpass their classic Fillmore set, but it's not too far off.

Jam album of the year? Could be!
