Yuko Mabuchi Trio: Yuko Mabuchi Trio

Yuko Mabuchi only recently moved to the United States but judging from her self-titled debut album it won’t take long for her to make a name for herself. Billed as the Yuko Mabuchi Trio she has surrounded herself with the abundantly talented Del Atkins (bass) and Bobby Breton (drums).

There are eight tracks; seven covers and one original included in this set recorded live in the Cammilleri Hall at the University of Southern California. This is a professional production and sounds absolutely top notch.

The concert begins with the Cole Porter 1929 classic “What Is This Thing Called Love”. After a riveting piano intro the band settles into a subtle groove led by Breton’s solid backbeat. This is a lively rendition with superb piano, bass and drum solos. Gentle brush strokes and subtle bass adds to the romanticism of Mark Louis Lehman’s “Valse Noire” before the band takes on the much recorded classic “On Green Dolphin Street” that has the trio keeping the wistful nostalgia the original invokes. More highlights include the irresistibly playful and melodic “Seriously” and the Jazz Medley “All The Things You Are, Take The “A” Train, Satin Doll” where the mood runs from the beautifully wistful to full on exuberance. Mabuchi’s piano work is a revelation throughout the piece.

Yuko Mabuchi has made quite the splash with this debut effort. Her talent as a pianist and as an arranger is never in doubt.
