Visions of Atlantis: The Deep & The Dark

New recruits Christian Douscha - guitars and Herbert Glos - bass joined the band last year and have fitted in seamlessly. Austria's Visions of Atlantis have a relatively settled lead singer Clémentine Delauney having been in situ for about four years now and this is reflected in an arguably more cohesive collection of songs than some of their quite generic earlier albums. This, I would argue is not necessarily a band destined to ever really escape the lower echelons of their genre league ladder unless they suddenly write 'that song', however, as with all their records The Deep & The Dark is worth investigating. Lyrically the opening verse is fairly instructional:

"Shut the light, call the night, bring my safety back
Are they gone, I hear none, as all fades to black
But your hand on my shoulder's calming me down
Build a wall, start a war, here they come for me
Grab the sword, come on board, face my enemy
But you silence all their cries when you speak your loving words"

I think you get the picture. "The Deep & the Dark" is both the opening song and a forthcoming single/video and is highly reminiscent of early Nightwish with a less operatic touch and I mean that as a very positive thing. It's within the realms of possibility that this song or the other single "The Silent Mutiny" could be that song for the band given a good amount of exposure. Clémentine Delauney has brought not only stability to the band but suddenly their songs have improved immeasurably - "Return to Lemuria" is one of several which could fit into the zeitgeist earworm category. . Male vocalist Siegfried Samer whilst not being as distinctive a voice blends well with her and much more than say, Delauney's previous band Serenity, Visions of Atlantis have really nailed the co-vocalist trait. This is by some distance the best Visions of Atlantis album so far.
