Nightwish: End Of Innocence DVD

Nightwish's End Of Innocence DVD presents a very in depth and comprehensive look at the band. The documentary included on the DVD is quite lengthy, and literally starts at the beginning and tells the story of Nightwish. The interviews are all in Finnish, with English subtitles.

Besides telling the story of the band, there is also studio footage, concert footage, and just plain hilarious nonsense footage blended into it. For a band that writes music that can be best described as dark, serious, haunting, and beautiful it's interesting to see the wackier side of the band. Most of the documentary I notice features the male members of Nightwish, and vocalist Tarja Turunen does very little talking (which I have to admit was rather surprising to me). From watching this, one gets the feeling that this bunch of characters must be really fun to hang around.

Also included on the DVD are the videos for the songs "The End Of All Hope", and "Over The Hills And Far Away". There is also an interview from MTV Brazil and concert footage from July 4th in Norway and Summer Breeze 2002. During the Norway segment, there is a very interesting performance of W.A.S.P.'s "Wild Child" which is sung by the bassist Harco Hietala. I never really imagined this song having keyboards taking one of the guitar parts, but the result actually sounds quite good! The footage for this part seems rather dark, while the Summer Breeze footage seems a lot clearer and better lit. Just select "The end of all the extras" (a clever title taken from the first track performed "The End Of All Hope") on the menu to get to the Summer Breeze footage. Between the 2, there are 11 tracks of live footage.

Judging by the wide range of content included on this DVD, it becomes not only essential to the Nightwish fan, but also an excellent introduction to the newcomer to what Nightwish is all about. With a detailed story, concert footage, videos, interviews, and just plain fun this DVD covers all the bases.

With this now being released in the United States (and with gothic metal bands like Evanescence making headway), fans in the western hemisphere can potentially experience what the European metal fans have known for some years: the magic and power of Finland's Nightwish!
