Winter Tree, The: Mr. Sun

The Winter Tree is the brainchild of Andrew Laitres (aka Andrew Robinson). Originally known as Magus, Laitres changed the name to The Winter Tree in 2010 and has released a number of albums since then, his latest titled Mr. Sun. Magus/The Winter Tree has been releasing quality music for years mostly in the neo prog/atmospheric-ambient/electronic vein and the new album is no exception.

Playing on the disc are Andrew Laitres (keyboards, bass guitar, bass synth pedals, percussion, acoustic guitar), Neil Taylor (Tears For Fears) on guitars, Neil Whitford (guitars), Steve Piggot (additional keyboards, bass guitar), Alistair Gordon (Tony Banks) on vocals, Megan Grosz (vocals), Justin James (vocals) and Mark Bond (additional lead guitar).

Nice melodies have always been a defining element of the band and The Beatle's influenced title track is a great start to the album with its pleasant melody and keyboards. The Gilmour influenced "Distant Star" is next with shard-like lead guitar heard through the entire track. On "Shine" the upbeat sections are balanced with more ethereal soundscapes the band does so well. The electronic side of the band comes through in tunes like the edgy "Master of Illusion" and the Alan Parsons-like "The Future Was Here" with its crisp and clean pulsating keyboard textures.

Mr. Sun is a highly enjoyable release from The Winter Tree. Fans of melodic progressive rock should really dig this.
