Sailing to Nowhere: Lost in Time

Sailing to Nowhere belongs to a small but special group of bands that use symphonic metal song structures along with a male and female vocalist to create a most dramatic and seemingly panoramic presence. Tracks like "Scream of the World" and "Ghost City" jump at you like a live performance playing in front a giant screen showing a science fiction battle on a distant planet. It's impossible to not be influenced by Dream Theater in this sub-type of genre but shades of Kansas shine through to great effect especially when the female vocalist steps to the front.

The tempo is thrown into overdrive with "Suffering in Silence" a speed metal gem infused with symphonics and a powerful percussion. If Pretty Maids went thrash metal this is close to what they would sound like. "Our Last Night on Earth" is a black metal influenced brilliant track that could stand alone from this album especially when it has the best overtones of King Diamond.

I've listened to enough metal symphonic groups to often wonder why I can't hear the bass player. I found him on "Fight for Your Dreams" and he carries this song to a bounce-heavy blast right to your chest. Sailing to Nowhere ends this melodic masterwork with "Start Again" a slow tempo semi-ballad featuring mostly the beautiful voice of Helena Pieraccini. At the moment, I can just imagine how spectacular this symphonic metal ensemble will sound in a live performance. It will be worth the wait.
