Unmerciful: Ravenous Impulse

Here's a long-awaited new release from a solid death metal band. I'm not sure how many listeners caught up with these guys back in the mid-2000s. The band released a solid debut in 2006 and then broke up. In 2012, Unmerciful started to show some renewed signs of life. They played a reunion show and began considering ways to become a working band once again. In a possibly symbolic act, the band released a demo in 2014 to show in small part what might be forthcoming. With this album, the band proves they still have solid chops that are definitely worth checking out. The current lineup includes Jeremy Turner (ex-Origin), Clint Appelhanz, Kris Bolton and Justin Payne. On the drums is none other than John Lengstreth (ex-Origin, Dim Makt, Gorguts, etc.). The songs on this release generally sound strong. The drumming is tight and powerful, never slowing down and always totally intense. Alongside him the band sounds great even if the songs are consistently drawing on the same kind of sound and style. For a long-delayed sophomore release, though, this is definitely worth a listen.
