Meier, Nicolas: Infinity

Nicolas Meier is a Swiss born musician who has become one of the UK's best guitarists. On his new album Infinity he plays acoustic fretless and fretted nylon string guitar, steel string guitar, glissentar, baglama, synth guitar and electric guitar and teams with Vinnie Colaiuta on drums and Jimmy Haslip on bass.

Infinity is a mixture of styles but predominantly exudes a Middle Eastern jazzy vibe with fantastic musicianship all around. Colaiuta's drumming is often intricate yet subdued showing an equal amount of power and deft of touch. If you are familiar with Haslip you will know his bass playing is beyond reproach and is no different on this release as he leaves his mark on every track. Last but not least is Meier's guitar, and folks does he ever have the chops to hang with the best. Especially of note is his acoustic playing which is so prominent on this disc.

"The Eye of Horus" delivers a strong Middle Eastern vibe with lighter and slightly heavier sections including excellent bass, acoustic guitar and violin solos. "Still Beautiful" is mellower, bordering on a smooth jazz sound with more outstanding bass and guitar solos. The Eastern tone is back on "Riversides" featuring more great picking from Meier and subtle background droning and violin. "Yemin" is a moodier piece, very alluring with a nice flow while "Legend" will impress you with its fantastic drum and guitar fills. "Tales" is another nice track starting on a gentle trajectory before the pace quickens along with Meier's amazing acoustic guitar.

While guitarists will certainly dig this disc there are also some nice melodies to behold which should appeal to many. Infinity is certainly a nice blending of Middle Eastern tones and jazz and is an album I will most definitely return to.
