Polyptych: Defying the Metastasis

The beginning of a new year usually means one thing: catching up on 2016 releases that I missed. I'm an organized listener, but there are just so many new releases. I doubt anyone keeps up with them all. This new release by Chicago's Polyptych is one of the ones I missed when it came out. With this release, the band's third, the band continues to prove themselves to be a new extreme metal powerhouse. This album also represents the band's debut with Blood Harvest.

This album wrestles with several themes, but mostly it concerns a world in rapid decline. The band describes it as a "Dark Knight narrative admonishing the evils of the modern age right before the shit really hits the fan." Songs like "The Decadent's Mirror," "Lexicon of Oppression," and "Scars of Modern Age" really bring out the theme beautifully. I also really liked "Triumph of the Swine," a shorter take on the larger themes addressed here. The best thing about this album is its layered approach to the music. Each track has multiple elements that work really well together. I was especially fond of the guitars, but the drumming is nothing short of incredible. Lyrically, the band also hopes to reach out to listeners in meaningful and significant ways. The themes are accessible and timely and smart. I was impressed with this one.
