Worm Ouroboros: What Graceless Dawn

What Graceless Dawn is the third release from California's ethereal doom act Worm Ouroboros, the trio comprised of bassist/vocalist Lorraine Rath (ex-The Gault, Amber Asylum), guitarist/vocalist Jessica Way (Barren Harvest), and drummer Aesop Dekker (Vhol, ex-Agalloch, Ludicra). As an early Christmas present via Profound Lore, What Graceless Dawn is a fascinating listen, filled with subtle moods and colors, the band never veering off into heavy riff based doom territory, instead riding that fine line between chamber music, ambient, folk, and post rock. Rath and Way's dual vocal attack lend an enchanting flair to the proceedings, calmly floating over the top of lilting guitar chords and meditative drums. As such, tracks like "Suffering Tree", "Broken Movements", and the epic "Ribbon of Shadow" have a completely somber feel to them, as wave after wave of mounting sadness is portrayed by the trio, which, for some might be completely thrilling or perhaps sleep inducing.

While I won't go out and claim that What Graceless Dawn is the most engaging release you'll hear in 2016, there's a certain quality found here that is instantly appealing. Vocally, there's lots to like, and while a little bit of more uptempo material might have helped get things out of first gear at times, this is an easy one to recommend.
