Nori: World Anew

This is one of the mellowest albums I have heard in quite some time. Nori hail from Austin, Texas and play a soft brand of jazz and folk music. The band includes Akina Adderley (vocals), Erik Telford (trumpet, alto horn), Nick Litterski (Fender Rhodes, piano, prepared piano), Aaron Allen (acoustic bass) and Andy Beaudoin (drums, percussion).

A gentle musical landscape is laid down by long drawn out horn, floating Fender Rhodes and subtle rhythmic play, all giving backbone to Adderley's crystal clear voice. "A New Sun" sets a positive tone as the playing is wistful, yet spry. The horn work and dreamy Fender Rhodes is a big plus. The subtleness continues with the soft hues of "The Garden" but this time the vocals and horns build into more urgent passages. "Footprint" is another mellow track with great vocals, serene styled trumpet and gentle Fender Rhodes. A world music element takes hold in the jazzy "Lullaby" accented with excellent trumpet work and wonderful bass play. The easy going ballad "Waiting To Fall" would feel right on a lazy Sunday afternoon and trumpet and piano intermingle in the album's last track "Coda", leaving a shorter footprint but no less enjoyable mark on what is a fine album.

If more serene jazz is to your liking and you especially dig some solid horn work World Anew just might be worth seeking out.
