Oranssi Pazuzu: Värähtelijä

Sometimes when I'm driving at a high rate of speed, I like to stick my hand out the window and let it move up and down with the force of the wind. It's fascinating to feel the force of the wind as it seems to move against the power of the car. I know I'm not the only who does this; I see people doing it all the time. It's oddly relaxing.

I mention this because experiencing Oranssi Pazuzu (Orange Demon) is a little the experience of your hand out of the window of a fast moving car. The music on this album is experienced as a push and pull in different directions, just the stuff to make you feel like you are floating or at least being moved in strange, slightly unpredictable ways. Overall, I'd describe the music as hard and intense but also hypnotic, psychedelic, and surreal. The music transforms the general warp and woof of extreme music by reducing its emphasis on structure and just following it where it wants to go, all the while adding new sounds and experiences for the curious listener.

For the most part, the music works pretty well even though its range and scope won't appeal to every listener in some consistent way. The way to listen is either to with a willingness to get lost in it or to try and figure it out. I was drawn to the band's ability to set up a consistent groove or rhythm or motif. The other sounds and experiments were good but sometimes distracting or just plain strange. Still, this is worth checking out, if only to hear what this increasingly popular band is up to. I bet Oranssi Pazuzu puts on a wild live show.
