Inwolves: Inwolves

One of the many pleasures of Jeff Beck's Blow by Blow is the vibrancy and texture of the music, Beck's guitar mastery, and Richard Bailey's thrilling percussion. There's no way I'm going to compare this album to one of Beck's classics, but I think fans of the latter may hear some parallels between them. I'm especially thinking of Karen Willems' equally energetic drumming. She's obviously talented and her sense of timing, precision, and vibrancy is everywhere on display here. Even so, this isn't an ego-driven release. Instead, it's an attempt to discover limits and—possibly—tto expand them. The music on this release, as listeners will quickly realize, is trippy. The band credits Kosmische Musik of the 1970s as inspiration and there's no denying that connection. Fans of the horror film scores in Dario Argento films will also feel at home with this album. It's weird, occasionally frightening, and otherworldly. I enjoyed it but found it slightly too long. "Be Kind," the album's closer, was exhausting.
