In Other Climes: Leftover

What French metal-core-punkers In Other Climes are doing with a song titled (clumsily) "We Are An European Band" (it's not even the beefed up reworking of the Grand Funk Railroad standard I'd hoped for...), I'm not sure. Basically these guys sound as American as, well, 99% of the bands hammering out this style. However, that itself isn't a problem and neither is the complete lack of originality to be found on Leftover (the album's cover with a brain deposited in a blood spattered toilet giving an indication as to the amount of out of the box thinking going on). And yet, the eleven tracks bluntly smashed over the head still somehow sidle up next to you to deliver a putrid smelling hug and blood soaked kiss. "Dreams", with it clever twisting of the famous Martin Luther King speech incorporated, tears it up as way of introduction and "Now I Know" knows now what it now knows right now through bouncing beats and scarred vocal gnashings. Lever in the effective use of the 'Do you know what nemesis means?…' quote from the film Snatch, which gives "Who Are You" a little more forcefulness and the slow chugalug fighting against blast beats of "I Walk Alone" and for all their failings, it's hard to argue that In Other Climes don't know exactly what they are and where their strengths lay.

So in essence, while the earth will rumble disapprovingly as you crank the volume to ear split setting, Leftover remains resolutely non ground breaking. Put that to one side and you are left with a potent album that could still sever your head with one fell swoop. If you're looking for a solid slice of metal that's happy not to challenge preconceived ideas or stretch genre boundaries, you could do much worse than make sure Leftover doesn't get left behind.
