I'm going to give the legendary Voivod a pass this time around for the truly awful cover art on their new Century Media EP Post Society, but, come on guys, you could have given us something better than this, right? Sorry Away, I know this was your creation, but it just looks amateurish. Anyway, on to the music, and what we have here are five tracks of vintage sounding Voivod, their metal-meets-punk-meets-prog hybrid in full force, and despite the passing of Piggy a few years ago his presence is still felt in their music. Two of the tracks are pieces previously available on the split seven-inch EPs with At the Gates and Napalm Death, two new songs, and a cover of the great Hawkwind tune "Silver Machine".
Daniel "Chewy" Mongrain stepped in after the loss of Piggy, and his energetic, choppy style fits right in to Voivod, as his labyrinthian riffs and leads twist & turn through raucous, complex tracks like "Forever Mountain", "Post Society", and the rampaging "We Are Connected". "Fall" is more of a mid paced prog-metal number, with some great shuffling riffs, intricate drums from Away, Rocky's beefy bass lines, and playful vocals courtesy of Denis "Snake" Bélanger. I'm not sure when "Silver Machine" was recorded, but as it stands it's a perfect tribute to the fallen Lemmy and his time with space rock legends Hawkwind. Snake's vocals are spot on, and the bands twisting, swirling and quite heavy arrangements work wonders on this classic, with Rocky's bass booming in grand Lemmy fashion.
Post Society is a hell of a lot of fun, and 30 minutes you'd be well advised to partake in till the next full length Voivod CD comes around.
