I'm not sure it's such a great idea in this day and age to depict the type of brutal violence that's plastered all over the cover art of Varg's new album The End of All Lies, but there's no denying that the German blackened death metal/thrash act have put together a pretty potent collection of tunes here despite the horrifying implications. Plenty of raging, thrashy goodness all over tracks like "Revolution", "Achtung", and the raging title track, as the band blend death metal, black metal, thrash, and a touch of folk metal for good measure, with powerful riffs, gravelly vocals, and acrobatic rhythms colliding over catchy melodies and brutal intensity. "The Dance of Death" takes a much more progressive & folky turn, while the furious duo of "Darkness" and "Winterstorm" just crush with severe malice, as harsh vocals burst through a wall of jackhammer blast beats, monolithic riffs and orchestral keyboards. "Rain of Ash" closes things out in majestic fashion, a sweeping, melodic number featuring clean vocals, folk embellishments, a touch of prog, and oh yeah, booming guitar riffs.
As I stated above, don't let the cover art turn you away from what is otherwise a very solid statement from this German metal act. Lots of variety included on The End of All Lies, so whatever your metal tastes might be, there's sure to be something here for you.
