Uriah Heep: Totally Driven

Back in 2001, legendary heavy rock act Uriah Heep set out to get ready for their 'Acoustically Driven and Electrically Driven' concerts by re-recording 27 of their classic songs from throughout their long history. Originally released under the title Remasters, that set quickly went out of print, and here we are 14 years later and the band have decided to relaunch the 2CD set under the title of Totally Driven. This release features the then long running line-up of Mick Box (guitar), Lee Kerslake (drums), Bernie Shaw (vocals), Phil Lanzon (keyboards), and the late Trevor Bolder (bass).

Many of the mandatory Heep songs are included here, such as staples "July Morning", "Easy Livin' ", "Gypsy", "Sunrise", "Look at Yourself", "Stealin' ", "Lady in Black", and "Traveller in Time", but it's the surplus of solid deep cuts from their '70s repertoire that really makes this set worthwhile. "Blind Eye", "Wonderworld", "Why Did You Go?", "Rain", "Bird of Prey", "Come Away Melinda", "Return to Fantasy", "Sweet Freedom", and "The Easy Road" are just a few of the sparkling classics the band dusts out for this set, all performed to near perfection by this version of the band. The second CD features more of an acoustic take on some tracks, and is heavier on the '90s Heep material like "Between Two Worlds", "Only the Young", "Time of Revelation" and "The Golden Palace". Throughout the band is completely on point, Lanzon's roaring Hammond organ battling with the cagey licks & riffs from Box while Shaw soars over the top.

Totally Driven is the first release under the new Uriah Heep Records, and comes in a charming 6-panel digi-pack with new artwork from Igor Morski. While most loyal Heep fans certainly have all these songs in many studio & live iterations, this is a great little set that is especially geared towards the casual listener, as it compiles many of the best tracks from the '70s & '90s versions of the band, delivered in spirited fashion. It's a shame that the very underrated early '80s era of the band has been overlooked for so long, but I guess you can't have everything.
