The old school death metal horde known as Grave are one of those bands you can always count on to deliver music that's familiar, satisfying, and punishing. These Swedes never reinvent the wheel, but their ability to create a bludgeoning wall of riffage that's always, dare I say, catchy, is always something to marvel at. Their latest Century Media release Out of Respect For the Dead, sees Ola Lindgren & Co. tearing it up once again as if it was 1991 all over again, 9 tracks of brutal Swedish death metal the way it ought to be played. As with some of their peers like Dismember, Unleashed, and Entombed, you kind of know what to expect with a new Grave album, and that's not necessarily a bad thing, as absolute crushers like "Flesh Before My Eyes" and "Plain Pine Box" lumber along with massive riffs, gravelly growls, wild whammy bar theatrics, and pounding rhythms. The title cut blazes at breakneck speed, as does the mighty "The Ominous "They"", while "Trail Of Ungodly Trades" mixes in some doom with their brand of crushing death metal, ultimately sounding a tad like vintage Celtic Frost. Grave takes this one step further on the monstrous "Grotesque Glory", close to 10-minutes of brutal riffs and ominous growls that blast straight out of the casket.
Again, no real surprises here on Out of Respect For the Dead, but just very solid old school Swedish death metal. Can't really ask for more than that!
