Nightfell: Darkness Evermore

It wasn't long ago that Nightfell released The Living Ever Mourn, a strong and confident debut album. With Darkness Evermore, Todd Burdette and Tim Call impress listeners once again with a solid blend of black / melodic metal. Sophomore albums can be significant releases in the lives of a band. Too often, they fall into the awful category known as the sophomore slump, that entropic falling off of power and creativity. This album has none of those problems. If anything, Nightfell sounds even better. I especially liked the alternating moments of quiet and the dynamic displays of power. At times, there's even a contemplative mood, one that gives listener's room to breathe, to let their guard down, before the blackened energy comes rushing back. Though this is not a concept album, there is an undergirding theme of ritual and rebirth. These themes have been covered before—have been for decades, really—but the band does well by them and never falls into routine. I've played this album about six times now and I find more to like with each listen. Check out "Rebirth" and "Eulogy" but don't overlook "Ritual." This is a highly recommended new release, one that should interest fans of black metal with a melodic twist.
