Here we have the debut EP from Sweden's Valley, a five piece instrumental outfit that combines post-rock, drone, shoegaze, jazz, folk, psychedelic & progressive rock. Sunburst (out on Version Studio Records) features 4 tracks of lilting arrangements, at times repetitive, at other dark & menacing, with weaving guitars and layers of drone permeating through the mix and a soft rhythmic undercurrent floating underneath. The most engaging track here is the opener "Tunguska", with its jagged guitar lines and dreamy soundscapes, and while "Picture Puzzle Pattern Door" percolates,bubbles, and has a tasty guitar solo, it never really gets out of first gear, which is kind of how the whole EP is. Each track sounds very similar to the one before it, and I guess if you like the minimalistic meanderings of Mogwai or Tortoise, then this will be right up your alley.
