King Giant: Black Ocean Waves

On this album, King Giant continues to offer listeners a successful blend of Southern rock and metal that's also soaked in the grooves of sludgy doom. The sound is dominated by big, beefy, and distorted guitars, the kind that make each song worth hearing. They just chug along beautifully, hitting every solo, harmony, and riff, with plenty of boogie and attitude. As I listened, I was sometimes reminded of the heavier releases by The Cult back in the 80s, the ones that sounded like a weird blend of The Doors and AC/DC. My comparison isn't quite right because the band also reminds me of The Sword but with more Southern swagger. My comparisons are never quite right. Simply put, if you like Southern metal with big guitars, you've got to check out King Giant. The songs on this album are all very good, but they occasionally go on a little too long. After a few tracks, the band established the basic sound of the album and stick to it from start to finish. From time to time my attention wavered, only to be brought back into the groove by the warmth and fuzz of the guitars.

In 2015, King Giant celebrates ten years in the music business. Sadly, they remain a band without a major record contract. This release, the band's third, was released independently. Someday, perhaps, more people will take notice of this talented band. Check out "Mal De Mer" and "Requiem for a Drunkard."
